Le premier match international de l'Australie a été disputé contre l'équipe en tournée des îles britanniques en 1899.

Le premier test a été joué au Sydney Cricket Ground et remporté 13–3 par l'Australie, mais les touristes ont remporté les trois tests restants.

The Australian team for the first match consisted of six players from Queensland and nine from New South Wales. The team wore the blue of New South Wales when playing in Sydney and the maroon of Queensland when playing in Brisbane, but with an Australian Coat of Arms in place of the usual emblems of each colony.

Newspapers in England initially gave the team the nickname ‘Rabbits’ but the Australians rejected this as they did not want the national team to be represented by an imported pest. They opted instead for the native Wallaby.
